Not all wounds are visible to the human eye and here at Sheltering Arms, we firmly believe in the importance of mental health. June is PTSD awareness month and we ask that you check in on the people in your life that suffer with this debilitating illness. For those of you unfamiliar with the disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder- or “PTSD”, is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
Sounds horrible right? This condition is very, very real and some of those suffering from it don’t always survive it. What’s worse is that not everyone believes in such a condition. We ask you all to reach out to those that suffer from this and to be their friend, be their shoulder, be the support that they so desperately need to get through it. There’s treatment available in the form of medications and counseling. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer from PTSD please reach out and seek help.
If you feel like you’re in a crisis, don’t hesitate to do any of the following:
Call 911
Go to the nearest Emergency Room
Contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 En Español: 1-888-628-9454
The National Center for PTSD has valuable resources at your disposal. Stay safe out there everyone.
